Poppy Barley Presents: The Mother's Day Event

Our mothers inspire our hopes and dreams. They help us establish a sense of self and a sense of style. Our mother, Joan (pictured with Justine, left, and me, Kendall), is responsible for all of the above. I inherited my mom's legs and feet. Justine and I, both, inherited the same baby toes as our mom - a quirky characteristic from the Elliot side. And so naturally, we named our very first Poppy Barley boot style after our mom (internally, The Off Duty Boot is known as The Joan Boot) to celebrate her name and acknowledge the immense influence she's had on our lives. The older I get, the more I understand just how much that influence means to me. Working side-by-side with my sister really highlights our shared mother-daughter characteristics, like our work ethic, bluntness, competitiveness and, of course, our undying love for baking. We were raised to believe we could do a lot in the world – and our lives were entirely our own to plan. While encouraging our ambitions, our mom never wanted us to believe in a perfect world, but rather a world where the goal was to design a life worth living; one that carries the emotions of a heart-filled, risk-taking adventure. Our mother taught us to accept set-backs, to challenge ourselves, and to outsmart problems standing in our way. Without these lessons, Poppy Barley would still be in the vague “one day” pile, or worse, the “I tried once and gave up” pile. Our mom’s motto, “New shoes, new life”, is a fun reminder that most things can be better with a simple change of perspective.
