The Read | Profiles Raise Her Up: Kendall & Justine Barber June 03, 2019 3-minute read In 2012, Kendall and Justine took a leap of faith by quitting their career jobs to start Poppy Barley. More than learning how to run a successful and nationally recognized business, they have learned how to listen to themselves. “Believe in yourself and then work your a** off.” –Justine Justine Justine “Believe in yourself and then work your a** off.” Day job: Co-CEO at Poppy Barley What I'm reading: I'm re-reading (for the 100th time) the Harry Potter series. I find it very relaxing to read fiction. What I'm listening to: Drake on Spotify Workout of choice: Currently, barre & pilates. What I'm doing when I'm not at work: Being a mom to my two boys (Jude 2.5, Elliott 7 months) or trying to carve out a jiffy of personal time. Unpopular opinion: Older kids should be allowed to play outside by themselves in most cities and neighbourhoods. (Probably older than 5, though exact age TBD as mine are so little) Kendall Kendall “Every role I stepped into had no roadmap, no previous way of doing something—I love that.” Day job: Co-CEO at Poppy Barley What I'm reading: The Rules Do Not Apply by Ariel Levy What I'm listening to: Podcasts New York Times—The Daily Dear Sugars Boss Files with Poppy Harlow Workout of choice: Running What I'm doing when I'm not at work: Chasing my 1-year old or baking chocolate chip cookies. Unpopular opinion: TVs belong in basements. No exceptions. “Every role I stepped into had no roadmap, no previous way of doing something—I love that.” –Kendall The What What is the best piece of career advice you have ever been given? Kendall: Pay close attention to the work you do first and note what projects sit on your desk the longest. Create a career around the work you always do first. Justine: Believe in yourself and then work your a** off. What was the worst? Kendall: Find a female role model. Justine: Don't take breaks in your career to travel because the gaps will be a red flag on your resume. What motivates you to put your all into your work each day? Kendall: The PB team (super talented!) and a deep rooted belief in our company's purpose. Justine: The people and the fact that I love 80% of the work. What one thing would you like to see change in the modern workplace to make it better for women? Kendall: A reform of Employment Insurance while on maternity leave. There needs to be space for a woman to work part-time and still receive EI—it should not be an all or nothing. Justine: I agree with Kendall on a reform of Employment Insurance while on maternity leave AND I think most employers could be a lot more flexible for most positions, with flexible schedules and work from home days. This would help women balance kids and work better, and in turn create happier and more productive employees. Win-win.
