How to Style Mary Jane Flats (and Pull Off the Balletcore Trend)

2-minute read

Mary Jane flats have taken the fashion world by storm in recent years, winning over women everywhere with their timeless design and unbeatable comfort. 2023 trend reports show no signs of them losing their appeal, especially with the rise of ‘balletcore,’ a popular trend involving ballet-inspired fashion.

This versatile shoe lends itself to varying personal styles, making it a must-have for every wardrobe. Here’s how to incorporate them into yours!

How to Style Mary Jane Flats

Denim Darling

Start with a pair of your favourite high-waisted jeans and a tucked-in tee. Layer on a cropped jacket and finish the outfit with a colourful pair of Mary Janes for a pop.

Fun and Floral

Choose a flowy midi dress in a floral print and pair it with a denim jacket. Finish the outfit with Mary Jane flats in a complementary colour.

At-the-Office

Pair a turtleneck sweater in a neutral tone with tailored trousers. Add a structured handbag, and finish the outfit with Mary Janes in a coordinating colour.

How to Pull off a Balletcore Look with Mary Jane Flats

'Balletcore' beautifully blends feminine pieces like tulle skirts and silk tops, as well as practical staples like bodysuits and wrap tops. And, of course, barre-inspired flats. Here's how to get the look with Mary Janes:

Soft and Romantic

Start with a silky slip dress in a neutral hue. Add a cozy cardigan in a similar shade for a tonal look. Complete the look with Mary Janes.

Classic and Chic

For a more streamlined look, opt for high-waisted trousers paired with a fitted bodysuit. Layer on a wrap top, and accessorize with a tote bag and matching Mary Janes.

Cozy and Casual

Embrace the comfort of the 'balletcore' style with a cozy knit sweater paired with your favourite black leggings. Add some texture by tucking your leggings into crew socks, and finish the look with Mary Janes.

Belt Measuring Guide

Belt Measuring Guide

A - High-rise style:

If you plan to wear your belt around your natural waistline, wrap a measuring tape around the narrowest part of your midsection. Then, add 3” to determine your high-rise belt size.

B - Mid-rise style:

If you plan to wear your belt lower than your natural waistline, you will require a dierent size. If you have a particular pair of bottoms you intend to wear your belt with, wrap a measuring tape through the belt loops while in a relaxed position.

When wearing your belt in your preferred style, it should fasten in the middle hole. The belt will relax with wear allowing you to cinch it tighter, as needed.

If you plan to wear the belt in both the high and mid-rise styles, you have two options:

  1. Select your high-rise style and fasten it more loosely when worn in the mid-rise style.
  2. Select your mid-rise style and fasten it more tightly when worn in the high-rise style.
