Heeled Boots for Short Women: Why They're a Must

5-minute read

Former Customer Associate from Poppy Barley loves her heels As I alluded to in my last post about tall boots for short women, I suffer from what the fashion industry coins a very detrimental condition… I am vertically challenged. Dun, Dun, Dunnn. I’m short (5'2", to be exact). It’s true, I admit it, and you know what?! I have survived – against all odds! Want to know how? Let me share my secret with you… For as long as I can remember, I have had an obsession with high heels – the higher the better! When Justine asked me to write about why heeled boots for short women are a must on the Poppy Barley Community page (in celebration of Poppy Barley's new Heeled Boots Collection!), I jumped at the chance, as did I jump at the chance to do a photo shoot with my top 15 pairs of heels! I currently own about 40 pairs of heeled pumps. The selection of heeled boots in my closet has been comparatively sad (I'm in the short legs, wide calves club!). Like, three pairs of heeled boots, tops. My obsession with heels started young, despite my Dad begging and pleading with me to wear what he described as "sensible" shoes... mmmm thanks but no thanks! Don’t get me wrong, I respect my Dad and his insight into all matters in life, but it’s HEELS; he simply can’t understand the allure of high heels! Right?! Right. Former Customer Associate from Poppy Barley loves her heels Luckily for me, my Mom shares the same love of high heels so she supported me in becoming one of those young toddlers who strutted around the house in her Barbie branded high heels, refusing to take them off for anything aside from bath time and the occasional soccer practice. Now, as most children mature, they outgrow their childhood tendencies, but me? Nope! I did the opposite. My love for high heels only flourished as I grew older and now I rarely leave the house without heels on – even if I am just going grocery shopping… yes, I am THAT girl. I’m just going to flat out say it – heels substantially improve my quality of living. I know, I know, that seems like such an extreme way of looking at it, but I thoroughly believe that if you “give a girl the right shoes, she can conquer the world” (Marilyn Monroe) and for me, the "right shoes" have always and will always be high heels. Yes, being short has its perks – I mean, the best things in life come in the smallest packages – right?! But being short is definitely a love-hate relationship for me that makes everyday occurrences – like joining a conversation at a social gathering without yelling, “Hey, you up there!” – a challenge. Luckily, us shorties can rock a pair of high heels to these gatherings and – presto! – problem solved. Heels also solve another very serious problem for those of us who are vertically challenged – when you are short, you (and the entire world) notice when you put on a measly 5 pounds. Yeesh! Luckily the extra height provided by high heels help create the illusion of a thinner, leaner frame – and let’s be honest, heels are a heck of a lot more comfortable and way sexier than a pair of Spanx. Truth. For these reasons and more, I am sure you can imagine how excited I was when we launched Poppy Barley's brand new Heeled Boots Collection just last week! The wood-grained stiletto heels measure at 3.5 inches (high-five!), and I was actually the first person to order a pair! I squealed with delight through the entire process. Poppy Barley heeled boots. I ordered the The Runway Boot in Black with Black Nubuck colour blocking (The Runway Boot creates the illusion of a t-strap sandal through leather placement, seaming, and a slightly pointed toe, and you can make the t-strap look less or more obvious depending on your colour blocking choices!). This boot is sleek, stylish and super sexy! Because I am short and love to wear skirts/dresses as much as possible, I decided to choose a boot height that was an inch below my knee crease, as I didn’t want to feel overwhelmed by the boots, and, instead, wanted to create the illusion of being taller than I really am. Trickery at it’s finest! Next on my bucket list will be The Promenade Boot in Sand Grey, which has eye-catching and elongating v-lines running down the ankle... *Drool* Poppy Barley heeled boots. What colour combos are you going to get for your first pair of perfectly fitted high heeled Poppy Barley boots?! I know, I know, tough choice! Good thing you can always order multiple pairs… I mean, it’s kind of a necessity, wouldn’t you agree?

Belt Measuring Guide

Belt Measuring Guide

A - High-rise style:

If you plan to wear your belt around your natural waistline, wrap a measuring tape around the narrowest part of your midsection. Then, add 3” to determine your high-rise belt size.

B - Mid-rise style:

If you plan to wear your belt lower than your natural waistline, you will require a dierent size. If you have a particular pair of bottoms you intend to wear your belt with, wrap a measuring tape through the belt loops while in a relaxed position.

When wearing your belt in your preferred style, it should fasten in the middle hole. The belt will relax with wear allowing you to cinch it tighter, as needed.

If you plan to wear the belt in both the high and mid-rise styles, you have two options:

  1. Select your high-rise style and fasten it more loosely when worn in the mid-rise style.
  2. Select your mid-rise style and fasten it more tightly when worn in the high-rise style.
