In medieval England—when every village had a shoemaker and all shoes were made just for you—cobblers used poppy seeds and barleycorns as the units of measurement for shoemaking. One barleycorn was equal to 1/3 inch and four poppy seeds equaled one barleycorn.
In 2012, sisters Justine and Kendall Barber launched Poppy Barley because they couldn’t find anything like it. Although they were newcomers to shoemaking, Justine and Kendall were raised to be creative, ambitious, industrious and ask a lot of questions.
From Edmonton, Alberta, the sisters searched for factories that shared their vision to re-think the footwear industry. Partnering with family-owned factories, Poppy Barley started producing sustainably-made footwear and accessories. Today, Poppy Barley is driven by the relentless pursuit to re-think luxury for people and the planet.
Poppy Barley acknowledges we are located on Treaty 6 territory, traditional lands of First Nations and Métis people.

With every conversation and decision we aim to inspire connections. We invite people to engage with us; to share their stories and voices. There is something special about the people who wear Poppy Barley. They’re honest and willing to take risks. They’re confident and fun. They are just as suspicious of cheap and generic as they are of the elite and arrogant.
