Leather Care - How to Care for Leather Shoes - Poppy Barley

premium leathers require premium care

Your Poppy Barley shoes are made with AA-Grade leathers. With proper leather care, they can last for years.

Because leather is a natural material, we recommend you avoid wearing your Poppy Barley shoes through excessive water, slush, snow and salt. Ideally, your Poppy Barley shoes should not be worn every consecutive day. Your Poppy Barley shoes will be happiest with a full day’s rest in cedar shoe trees between wears.

For men’s shoes, always use a shoehorn when sliding your feet in. Never use excessive force to get your feet in. This will help prevent the back of the shoe from breaking down. See the steps below outlining how to care for leather shoes.

how to clean leather shoes

REMOVING SALT STAINS
It is important to remove salt stains as soon as possible from your leather shoes. Once the salt stains dry and set, it is very difficult to get rid of them. Use a mixture of warm water and lemon juice or vinegar to dab away salt stains (do not use this solution on suedes or nubucks). Allow the leather to dry on its own. Do not use heat to accelerate the drying process.

REMOVING DIRT
Use a soft brush to loosen dirt and mud from your leather footwear. If a brush doesn’t remove all of the dirt, use a damp cloth to wipe away excess dirt. You may also lightly scrub away dirt with a leather cleaning product. Allow the leather to dry completely on its own before applying any conditioners, polishes or protectors. Do not use heat to accelerate the drying process.

Cleaning Tips:

  • Follow directions on the label of any cleaning products used.
  • For nubuck Poppy Barley shoes, allow salt stains to dry, then brush away gently. The water and lemon or vinegar solution won’t work for nubuck.

how to care for leather shoes

Leather is a natural material that requires moisture to remain supple. Unlike our own skin that replenishes moisture naturally, leather needs moisture added often in order to last (every 8-10 wears). Leather conditioners can be found in sprays or creams (applied with a cloth). Make sure your Poppy Barley shoes are clean and dry before you apply conditioner and always test on a small area before use.

Keep in mind that it is much more effective to apply a few light coats of conditioner than one heavy coat. This may clog the leather’s pores and won’t be absorbed as readily.

If you want to polish your Poppy Barley shoes, choose a colour that matches the leather. Our Leather Care kits include polishing agents that are neutral in colour and can be used across leather colours. Rub polish on with a soft cloth and remove any excess polish with a clean cloth. Use a polishing brush or buffing block once the polishing agents have absorbed to achieve a high shine.

Caring Tips:

  • Follow directions on the label of conditioners or polishes.

how to protect leather shoes

Before you wear your Poppy Barley shoes outside for the first time, it is important to protect them with a water resistant spray. Keep in mind this will not make your shoes waterproof, so avoid wearing them in excessive rain, slush or snow. Spray your shoes with a leather protector three times, allowing them to dry between coats. Continue to protect them using a water resistant spray or wax every 8-10 wears.

For Poppy Barley flats and men’s shoes, if you want to prevent the leather soles from soaking up excess moisture, apply mink oil regularly. Be careful to apply mink oil only on the sole, not on the upper leather.

Caring Tips:

  • Follow directions on the label.
  • Use protectants specially designed for suede or nubuck on your nubuck Poppy Barley shoes, but it’s best to wear nubuck footwear in clean, dry weather conditions.

how to store leather shoes

If you’re putting your Poppy Barley shoes away for the season, be sure to clean and condition them first. Stains and salt can ruin the leather if they are left on for too long. Make sure they are completely dry before putting them away in your Poppy Barley dust bag. Keep them away from direct sunlight (or they will fade) and away from heat sources (or leather may dry and crack).

It’s a good idea to put cedar shoe trees in your Poppy Barleys to store them. These absorb excess moisture and prevent permanent creasing where the toe bends.

Storing Tips:

  • Do not wear shoes consecutive days. Allow a minimum 24-hour rest with cedar shoe trees.
